Well, some of it anyway! On Monday we headed into Minneapolis where we visited some additional “phone friends” at Banner and Turck. It was not only fun to meet folks I’d been talking to for years, but it was also fun to give them a tour of our home. (Especially since most of them had heard me talk about it for years and years!)

From Minneapolis we headed south to Iowa. We stopped at the Winnebago Factory in Forest City but missed the tour. It was interesting though to see how that growing industry impacted that area. The reason we missed the tour was because we decided to stop for breakfast along the way (Leland Café – Home Cooking by Marcia), and were treated to seeing a group (covey?) of homing pigeons being released. It was pretty cool – the bird handler told us how the timing is all done electronically these days. Here’s a shot of the release….

From there we were on our way to visit friends we hadn’t seen in probably 30 years. Dave and Becky moved to Iowa in the mid seventies, and none of us can remember if we ever saw each other after that. Needless to say, we had a lot to catch up with! While we were parked in their neighborhood, we took a trip to the Amana Colonies that is nearby. The “Amana’s” were a religious sect that believed in communal living. They maintained that lifestyle until 1932 when a huge fire along with growing dissatisfaction with communal living necessitated a change to a private ownership corporation. If you are ever in this area I recommend a visit here. We only got to see a small part of the community, but it was very interesting. There’s a 160 acre lake there (Lily Lake) that is just packed with pond lilies – and in the fall is a major spot for eagles. The water is very low this year – but here’s a shot of Lily Lake.

And here we are with Dave and Becky – I’m sure we’ll keep in touch better now!

How did you manage to stay in touch all those years when you never saw each other at all?

    I’m impressed!

  1. [...] Can it be? We’ve been on the road for two years. As I thought about our time traveling I thought about our windshield plant. The one on the left is from our first month out (and judging from the road it’s in Ohio!), and the one on right was taken just yesterday. The two together tell an interesting story. In the beginning we were literally on the road more. Those first windshield shots were mostly of what the passing scenery looked like. The current view from the windshield is more apt to be that of a camping area at a SOWER project. When we started out the dash was relatively uncluttered. Now, we not only have a photo gallery on the dashboard, but even the plant saucer has grown to accommodate shells and stones and other memories. I hope it also shows that we have been busy making this 40 foot tube our home and not just the place we live. And of course, the plant has grown. I hadn’t really noticed how much bigger it had gotten until I looked back over some photos from early in the trip. (This plant is a cutting from a Jade plant I bought the first year we were married. I couldn’t bring the whole thing (it’s HUGE now!), but I wanted to bring at least a part of it.) As the plant has grown, I believe so have Gary & I. We’ve learned (and are still learning) how beautiful and vast this country is (and how much of it we have yet to see), how beautiful the people are that we’ve met along the way, and the precious beauty of quiet time with the Lord. So just where have we been this past year? Well, we started Year2 in Wisconsin, popped into Minnesota, visited with friends in Iowa, worked SOWER projects in Illinois, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. And yes, we still seem to be having trouble staying west of the Mississippi River. [...]
