Wrapping up Washington

OK, so I’m not actually wrapping up ALL of Washington, just the little tiny bit that has been our resting place for the last month. Aside from a little more rain than I could appreciate, I have been very impressed with the beauty of the state. Yesterday we did our final “tourist” event for Washington – a ferry ride from Anacortes (about 30 miles north of here) to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. It’s about an ferry hour ride through the beautiful islands – and the day was just perfect. Friday Harbor is a lovely “quaint” island town that thrives on the tourist trade. We spent the afternoon just strolling around the streets, enjoying a lovely lunch with a view, sharing an expensive ice cream cone, and watching the boats in the harbor. We even got to see a couple of planes land in the harbor. The ride back to Anacortes was a little quieter – all that fun had tuckered us out!

And what we saw –

(All this having fun is exhausting! Especially after that long check-list day the day before! He really did take about a 1/2 hour nap on that bench!)
We finished the day with a drive to Deception Pass – just a little out of the way, and we wanted to share it with the Carpers and the Stoners.

I think it was worth the trip for everyone!

One of the common sights here in Washington is the corner expresso kiosk. I don’t believe I have EVER seen so many stand alone coffee stands.
Many are similar to this Perky Bean Stand –
And some, like the Mercury Coffee Co., go a little farther to make themselves more interesting-

But there are always those that truly stand out in a crowd –
And my all time favorite –
There is certainly no excuse in the Pacific Northwest to complain of not being able to get a good cup of coffee!

So tonight we had our prayer circle and exchanged hugs with our new Sower friends that we worked with last week. As is so often the case, it was like instant family, and it was sad to be saying good-bye. Here we are (more or less behaving) for our group shot:

But as sad as we are to leave our new friends (and this beautiful area), we are so very excited about beginning our journey north to Alaska. Our little caravan will be pulling out tomorrow (Monday the 11th) morning – pointed toward the Canadian Border! I don’t know what my internet connections will be once we leave here (except that my usual connection won’t work in Canada), but be assured I will be updating as often as I can. In the meanwhile – here is our basic route –
Warm Beach to Alaska
Phew, it’s a long way! (um, like 2300 miles!)
So, let’s just look at what we hope to accomplish tomorrow –
Warm Beach to Hope
Getting diesel in the US, crossing the border (and who knows how long it will take for all three of us to get through customs), stopping at Minter Gardens in Rosedale, BC. and maybe making it as far as Hope.
Oh My Goodness – We’re going to ALASKA!

PS (anyone still here?)
A couple of folks asked how to make some of the pictures in the collages from my Columbus post bigger. I couldn’t make that happen, but here are links to the actual pictures from those collages if you’d like to see bigger images-

And if you’d like to see more Ferry/Friday Harbor/San Juan Island pictures – Here you go!

Big day tomorrow – I better get to bed!
Hope to be back soon!
