This weekend lived up to all my expectations of how wonderful a Birthday Weekend should be! (Lots of you know that I claim all fun things in November as celebration opportunities, regardless of whether or not they actually have anything to do with my birthday. That’s just the way it is!).
The fun started on Thursday evening when the school where we’re volunteering put on their Fine Arts Banquet and Auction (FABA) – their largest fund-raising event of the year.
It was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
The evening started with performances by students and faculty –
All the music was excellent, and then after we enjoyed a wonderful meal, an original play was presented. It was a charming love story set during WWII.
The play was so well done – and the entire evening was a total delight!
So that was the start of the weekend! Pretty sweet, eh?
Friday began with an early call to wish our sweet Maddie a happy 6th birthday! These grands are growing up WAY TOO FAST!
I love me some early morning Face Time!
The day progressed nicely – we spent a couple hours helping to set up for that evening’s FABA presentation (yes, they do the whole thing two nights, with almost 400 folks each night!), had a quiet afternoon (read:nap), and then enjoyed a fun evening babysitting for these two cuties –
Did this Gramma’s heart good!
On to Saturday. Gary (being Gary) put in a couple of hours at the school (painting areas he can’t get to when there are students around) while I slept in (hey, it’s my birthday). And then we were off for an impromptu jaunt to South Padre Island.
First stop – a breakfast taco from the corner gas station. Fresh tortilla (really, hot-off-the-griddle fresh) filled with egg and chorizo. All for 99 cents. Yummmmm…. Truly a Valley treasure!
Next up – the Birding Center of SPI!
to guys in boats
that looked more like a overloaded raft, there was plenty to see at the Birding Center!
Oh, and there were some pretty fine birds there too!
We loved the birding center – an interesting video, a small museum, and lots to see in the beautiful habitat of the Laguna Madre Bay – make sure you check it out next time you’re on SPI!
(Can you find the heron by the little tree? He was very determined that this was the spot he was going to find lunch!)
But we didn’t drive all the way to South Padre Island (it’s about 70 miles from where we’re working) to not put our feet in the ocean!
We grabbed a bite to eat –
(Totally NOT counting calories today – it’s MY BIRTHDAY, right?????)
and then headed to the beach!
Oh yeah, baby –
Feet in Ocean – now that’s a good way to celebrate a birthday!
Ah, yes, it was a very fine day all around!
Add to that phone calls and Face Time with all my kids and grands plus calls from my sisters, a DQ Blizzard for dinner (don’t judge me – we’re not counting those calories today, right?!) and I don’t think it could have been a better day!
And – Late Breaking News – there are MORE PICTURES! 🙂 See the complete set of FABA pictures and South Padre Island – just click on the links!
