Five years ago Memorial Day also fell on May 30th. That year we were at Pilgrim Pines Conference Center in New Hampshire and were able to join them in a Memorial Day time of reflection. To those who have given their all, we all owe a debt of gratitude. And to those who continue to offer their all, we owe a world of thanks.
Lest We Forget – May 30, 2011

I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did.
