It’s hard to know

just where to begin to recap our week with our Ohio kids and Grandkids!  So I guess I’ll just start at the beginning!

We arrived just in time for a lovely (?) early spring snow storm.

Brrrrrrr…..

IMG_1869
There was lots and lots of snow
IMG_1765
but fortunately, as is usually the case with those late winter storms, the snow didn’t stay around too terribly long, and by later that week, all that white stuff was just a memory.
Thank goodness!
Inside the house, the snow was not an issue as Toby and Gary (along with friends Dave and James) got to work on finishing off the basement. There is still plenty of work to do before it’s actually a “finished basement”, but what started out like this –

Ended up looking like this –

Here’s the team working on the ceiling –

And then there was the peanut gallery –

I think the builders were pleased with the progress – walls and ceiling up, insulation done, electric all up to code (and inspected!) and it’s cleaned up and ready for the next mess – step – finishing the drywall. 🙂 Ugh.
But it wasn’t all work. Since the girls were on Spring Break, by the end of the week (once the snow was gone and the days were a bit warmer and Gary & I were feeling a bit better) we were trying to fit in some fun stuff too! Friday afternoon we bundled up and headed to the Columbus Zoo!

Try as I might, I just couldn’t seem to get everyone happy in these group shots –

It was a fun outing – and you could really tell that Spring was in the air!
Zoo Day-6
“Look at me!” “No, look at ME” 🙂

The next day we took a drive out to Mansfield and the Ohio Bird Sanctuary – a bird rescue center.
OhioBirdSanctuary-1
Our little Ellie is quite the owl fan,
OhioBirdSanctuary-3
so she was especially delighted to check out the several different owls that were there.
OhioBirdSanctuary-2
Along with seeing owls, and falcons, and other rescued birds, we also enjoyed a lovely hike!

“I’m coming, Dad!”
And another attempt at the group shot (with a little help from Pops!)

We finished off our day in Mansfield with a great lunch at the Coney Island Diner and then a spin on the historic carousel in the center of town.

It was a fun day, through and through!

~~~~~~~
OK, enough grandbabies for today! Here’s a real-time update:
We made it safely to Montrose Bible Conference and since it’s been too cold to open up the campground, we’re parked down at the main campus, pretty much in the thick of things.
2013-04-03_12-01-43_412
We’ll be moving to the campground when spring REALLY arrives (it’s going down into the 20’s again tonight!!!!), but for now this is a great spot.
2013-04-03_11-59-57_613
Especially since our work is focused on that big white building on the left! 🙂
We’re getting reacquainted with the area and are beginning to connect with our friends here from last summer.
Yep, it’s good to be back!
Just to let you know….
that we are still alive!
After February with its “Post a Day” frenzy, and even most of March where I was shooting for every other day, the last 10 days have been just a blur of grandchildren, basement remodeling, flu and cold bugs, and well, just general blurriness! Each night as we would wrap up our time in the house (usually right after the kids went to bed), we’d head out to the RV, I’d check my emails for anything critical, glance at Facebook to catch any highlights, and then reflect on how I really needed to update this blog.
And then I would go to bed.
Literally, the night that the kids all went out to Bible Study, Gary and I were in the RV and IN BED by 6:30.
OK, enough whining! It wasn’t all coughing and wheezing – there were some delightful times during our stay in Marysville, and I’ll try to highlight some of them over the next couple of days. Right now we’re on our way to Montrose Bible Conference where we’ll be working on (and completing, right?) Part II of the Dryer Hall A/C project for the next several months.
Back on the road, headed to Montrose, PA. Sad to say farewell to the kids and the grands, but we're excited for our next adventure!
Tonight we’re parked at a Flying J along Interstate 80
2013-04-02_19-31-54_752
and tomorrow (Lord willing!) we’ll  complete the last 200 miles of the trip.
And as hard as it was to say good-bye to these little sweeties (and their Mom and Dad),
2013-03-28_18-51-28_929
I have to tell you I am Very Ready to put out the slides, tidy up the house, and begin to catch up on the life that somehow continued on last week, even though I was (happily) stuck in Grandchildren Mode.
Right now….it’s off to bed!
Sweet Dreams!
Fun Finish!
The last work day of any SOWER project typically goes one of two ways.  Either you’re working feverishly trying to finish up a particular assignment, or everything is done and since it’s too late to start anything new, you spend the day picking up tools and generally just tidying up where you were working. This project was just a bit (understatement) different! We did start the day wrapping up some outstanding chores – the ladies finished up the monthly newsletter and the guys wrapped up anything that still was on the list. We all gathered back at the dining hall around 11 AM for an early lunch. Dry Creek, once a month from September to May, puts on a Community Catfish Dinner. It was happening on our last day so we not only got to enjoy the meal (camera was in the truck, but imagine fresh fried catfish, the best hush puppies you have EVER had, creamy coleslaw, and a yummy dessert)but then we got to help serve it to the 250+ folks that came to the meal. It was a very fun way to finish off the project, but hold on – the day got even better. 🙂
After all that goodness, we were all (including the entire staff and their families) treated to a good old fashioned Louisiana Crawfish Boil!
Here’s how it went –
First there was the gathering of all the equipment.
Crawfish2013-1
Cook pots, coolers, the grill (for the hamburger folks!) – there’s a lot that goes into this process!
OK, first thing is to fill the pots with water and get them to boiling.
Crawfish2013-3
You can tell this is serious business!
Crawfish2013-4
Here, Dad – do you need this yet?
While the water comes to a boil,  it’s time to start on the crawfish.
Crawfish2013-5
You dump them in one of the coolers and then fill it up with water to give them a good rinse.
Crawfish2013-7
Actually you do that a couple of times. Let’s face it,  these critters aren’t called mudbugs for nothing!
Crawfish2013-8
OK, it looks like the water is pretty clear, and the water over in the pots was bubbling away.
Crawfish2013-11
Meanwhile, there was another activity that was just starting up –
Crawfish2013-10
This is call a “candle”. One of our SOWERS makes these all the time at his church (in Wisconsin), and the folks at Dry Creek were curious to see how it might work for them. You take a hollow log, cut a little hole in the side and set it up on blocks and then start a fire at the base. The plan is that the flames will come out the top and light up the area (like a candle!).
Crawfish2013-12
Crawfish2013-13
There was still plenty of daylight, but everyone was excited when they saw the first flames come out the top!
OK – back to the crawfish….
Did I mention the seasoning?
Crawfish2013-2
Good ol’ Zatarains! It was great!
Crawfish2013-14
The first batch goes into the pot. Bring it back to a boil and let it boil for about 7 minutes. At the end, pull the liner out of the pot,
Crawfish2013-16
hold it still so I can take a picture
Crawfish2013-14
and then dump those little beauties into a cooler.
Crawfish2013-17
Add another generous dose of the Zatarains and a good swig of the lemon juice
Crawfish2013-18
then close it up and give it a good shake.
Crawfish2013-19
A really good shake.
Crawfish2013-20
Then they mellow in the cooler for about 20 minutes. 🙂
And then you start up the next batch. They had gotten 150 lbs. of crawfish – so let’s just say there were several more batches!
Meanwhile, the crowd was beginning to fill out –
Crawfish2013-15
and the candle was doing great!
Crawfish2013-22
Once the crawfish was done they did a pot of the fixins’ – potatoes, corn, sausages and mushrooms.  Yummm!
Crawfish2013-25
And got the burgers and dogs going for the non-crawfish eaters!
Crawfish2013-23
And then, my friends, it was directly onto the tables –
Crawfish2013-26
And we dug on in!
Crawfish2013-27
Oh, my. So very messy – and so very good!
Crawfish2013-28
And it wasn’t just us chowing down –
CrawfishTables
(The folks at the white table were the burgers and hotdog crowd).
And the candle?
Crawfish2013-37
It was awesome!
Crawfish2013-38
The two Garys found just the right spot to let all that crawfish settle,
Crawfish2013-39
and some of the bigger little kids were trying their best to get a pine cone into that little square hole!
Crawfish2013-40
Let’s face it, it pretty much held the attention of all of us!
And at the end of the evening, we all gathered ’round that candle and had a time of prayer – thanksgiving for the work that was done (and the wonderful food we had eaten), for safe travels for those leaving the next day and more thanksgiving for blessings of Dry Creek Camp and the folks there.
Crawfish2013-43
Oh yes, now that was a fun end to a wonderful project!
If you’d like to see some additional pictures of the Crawfish Boil – there are Here. (Unfortunately, they are not in order – Flickr is being goofy tonight!)
*********
Real time update – we are just finishing up our second 12 hr day on the road, heading to Marysville, OH for a nice long (and productive – Toby and Gary are finishing off the basement) visit with the kids (big and little).  Right now we’re in Lexington, KY and have about 200 miles to go tomorrow. The weather report is dismal – calling for snow in the afternoon, so we’ll be on the road pre-dawn to try and beat the flakes.  Really? Winter storm warnings?
Gary is better :), I’m sick with a cold :(, and except for a sweet lunch with my niece Chris in Chattanooga, this has been simply a “get-us-there” drive. We Can Not Wait to get to see the kids! Hopefully we’ll both be well enough to hug them!
Real Life
Trip to Urgent Care (an hour away) – $206.50
Diagnosis – Influenza B
Trip to Pharmacy on way home – 156.32
Tamiflu & Prednisone
Gary on the mend………………….Priceless!
After two days of Gary feeling crummier and crummier, we finally made our way (reluctantly, I confess – going to the Dr. when we’re on the road is really low on our list of things to do!) to the closest Urgent Care we could find. Yes, it was an hour away, and yes, we did wait for an hour and a half in the waiting room (not really bad for an urgent care) and yes, we did wait for another hour + in the examination room. (Did you know they have TVs in those waiting rooms now? WoW! Whatever happened to last year’s Good Housekeeping?) Then there was the hour at Walmart waiting for the prescriptions. And the hour ride home. Almost 7 hours from time of departure to time of return makes for a long day when you’re feeling punk, but Gary did get a couple of naps in during those waiting room spells. And the good news (unrelated to the flu) is that we found gas for $3.18 while we were in Lake Charles!
Wait. Did I just say that gas for $3.18 was Good News? It’s all in the perspective, isn’t it? It’s 3.79 on the corner here in Dry Creek!
We’re praying that we got the flu diagnosis early enough for the Tamiflu to be be effective, and that the predisone works its magic and Gary is on the mend. We’ll keep him away from folks (and there only will be kisses on the forehead from me) for the next couple of days, but we’re still hopeful that we can pack up and hit the road Friday morning. We’ve got places to go, and people to see! 🙂
But if you’ll excuse me, right now I need to go wash my hands!
Books
Let’s face it, life in 300 sq. feet does not allow for a lot of library space. Generally our book modus operandi is to identify a good author, scour ebay for good buys, pay no more than $2.00 (including shipping) for a paperback and when we’re done reading it, it goes into the bag and eventually finds its way to a local thrift shop. It’s true that I’m more apt to hang on to a good book (or series) since I don’t mind re-reading a treasure, but our rotating book stock plan works pretty well. Occasionally I’ll get a book from a SOWER friend that once read needs to be passed on to another SOWER. Books by Karen Kingsbury, Tracie Peterson, Francine Rivers, or Jan Karon rotate around the SOWER ladies with great ease. The tradition is to read it, sign the cover and then pass it on. Recently, though, I was “loaned” a very precious book (really just more than a booklet) called I Talk to Myself a Lot by Audre Pitts.
Italktomyself-1
As you can see, it’s been around for a while.
Italktomyself-2
Virtually every page shows signs of repair.
Italktomyself-4
And the list of folks who have read it inside the front cover?
Italktomyself-3
Now there’s a who’s who list of SOWER ladies!
This little book was filled with sweet vignettes of the foibles of aging. With chapter titles like
  • I’m Always Getting Lost
  • I Know I Put It Somewhere
  • Have I Told You This Before?
I knew it would be a book that would truly speak to me!  Here’s my favorite –
Growing Up or Growing Old?
Am I growing up – or just growing old?
Growing old sometimes means:
Aches and pains,
forgetting more and more,
gradually losing family and old friends,
moving to smaller quarters
and giving up cherished belongings,
reduced income,
repeating myself more often.
But growing up means:
speaking to someone instead of turning a cold shoulder
listening with kindness (if not intense interest) to an anecdote I’ve heard so often I could tell it better myself.
smiling – even when I feel like glowering,
doing something for someone without telling anyone about it (It’s such a temptation to let people know how nice I am.),
making friends instead of enemies,
saying I’m sorry when I really am, but don’t want to admit it,
appreciating others as much as I think they should appreciate me,
letting someone behind me (who is in a hurry) go ahead of me at the grocery check-out. (That isn’t easy!)
Growing up means growing more kind, more friendly, more thoughtful, more generous, more compassionate, more cheerful, and more emotionally secure.
I can’t help growing old – the step is slowing and the wrinkles are showing, but God, give me grace (I need it) to grow up along with it.
Because growing up will probably mean the difference between happiness and bitterness while I am growing older. I do not want to be bitter. Bitter people are lonely people – and very unhappy people. Nor do I want to remain an emotional adolescent all my life.
Dear God
As I older grow,
May I be childlike
In my love for Thee,
But never childish
In my actions toward others.
Keep my spirit young, God,
But help me to accept my years,
Knowing that every age
Has its own rewards.
~~~~~

What a precious little book!  I’m delighted to sign the cover myself and pass it along! I’m sure it will bless the next SOWER (or anyone) who might just talk to themselves a lot!
