Tales from our travels

Tornado Warnings!

Yikes – there’s nothing like driving in an RV in an unfamiliar area when the national weather service keeps breaking into the radio program to announce TORNADO SIGHTINGS!! Talk about learning about an area in a hurry! We determined that we were not in the path, but it was still pretty disconcerting. We were headed south toward Milwaukee (having left our project at Lake Lundgren). In the sky to the east was a beautiful full moon. Right under the moon was a shelf of clouds – and inside the clouds was a magnificent light show of lightening. It was a beautiful sight. If it hadn’t been for that tornado thing…….
We’re safe in a quiet Cracker Barrel parking lot just outside of Milwaukee – I’ll catch up soon ~ cause right now I’m headed to bed!

Pine Mountain Ski Jump

When most tourists are looking for waterfalls and other natural wonders, we joined our friends Carol and Dwight Martin in a quest to climp the highest artificial ski jump – Pine Mountain Ski Jump
It was quite a sight to behold – here is a shot as we approached it….

Getting closer didn’t make it seem any more do-able…..

We made it to the top of the hill (398 steps) and then started up the wooden jump. And this is as far as I got!

While Gary & I didn’t make it to the top (though Gary made it at least half way), Carol and Dwight both made it to the top!
At the top!
Here we are going down. This was an amazing exercise in going up and down – we passed (and were passed) by a gentleman who goes up and down the steps 6 times about 4 times a week. Yikes!

And one last shot – this was a pretty view – but I really liked the way God arranged the clouds. Cool.

Door County Delights!

I’m in Kingsford (like in the Charcoal!), MI, sitting in a delightful cafe that has wireless internet. Whoee!!! I’ve been able to get some work done and even got those Door County pictures uploaded. Here are a couple of my favorites –
Getting ready for a perfect day….

And just one shot of the sunset God painted for us as we sat on the jetty in Sister Bay

There are other photos from the day on Upper Peninsula Set if you go to the Flickr website (see slide show on sidebar). I’ll figure out how to make a better link in the future, I promise!

Unless I’m going to order lunch, I’d better not out stay my welcome here!

This weekend instead of sightseeing, we’ll be washing and waxing the house! Can’t wait! Right.

First things First – Door County

Because I have had some business connections with companies in Wisconsin, I had heard that I HAD TO GO TO DOOR COUNTY. I actually had no idea where that even was, but I had always made a mental note that it was a “must see” on our list. Turns out (for those of you who are as geographically challenged as I am), Door County is the peninsula just north of the city of Green Bay. It juts out into Lake Michigan forming Green Bay (the bay, not the city). As you head north you first come to Sturgeon Bay – a small city that was built around the shipping industry. Crossing over the channel takes you to the upper peninsula which is filled with quaint villages whose primary goal is to make tourists happy. With names like Sister Bay and Ephriam, these towns are filled with marinas, galleries, eateries, shops for every imaginable collectable, wineries, and farm stands. We were blessed with picture perfect weather and made the drive from end to end. We stayed overnight at a little motel (Bluffside Inn) in Sister Bay where we could just see the water through the trees. We walked to the docks though and watched the sunset over the lake. Just about perfect! We visited the wineries, ate cherry pie, found a couple of quilt shops, and took a 2 hr. cruise from one end of the channel to the other in Sturgeon Bay. Many beautiful photo ops along the way – As soon as I get a better internet connection I’ll get some of them posted!

Check out the slide show…

Well, apart for the new pictures of the girls, I’ve also added some of our Michigan sights to this new “Flickr” picture manager. It’s just to the right of the post, so feel free to scroll through and see what we’ve been seeing! If you click on one of the smaller images, it will open up a larger one – along with the option to see others I have uploaded.
Ah, the learning curve!
I’ll post later about our wonderful side trip to Door County, Wisconson (the peninsula that goes north from Green Bay).
