Mondays are for Memories…..For the Birds

Since we have those fun Pileated Woodpeckers hanging around, I thought I’d look through the archives to see if I had any other “Bird Stories” to remember. I came across this one from back in November of 2013 when we were in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. If you think those little brown house sparrows are boring – check it out!
11/26/2013 – For The Birds
Since the Rio Grande Valley is home to the World Birding Center, and renowned in birding circles for its wonderful birding opportunities, I was anticipating great things after we hung our bird feeders on our living room window awning shortly after we got settled in our winter campground. Bird seed in one, sunflower seeds in the other, suet feeder in the center. (Note to self – suet is not really the ideal medium in 80+ degree climates. If you try to make it work, make sure it isn’t hung over anything that could be damaged by melting suet. But I digress….)
Bird feeders hung. We were ready and waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
Finally, after about a month of nuttin’, a couple of house sparrows discovered the free lunch.

And once they spread the word, it wasn’t long before that bird feeder was emptied out.

“Wait, I think I see something!”
After that feeder got cleaned out, they moved to the sunflower seeds. Oh my, how they moved!

The changing of the guard.
Once they discovered this ready supply of food, it wasn’t long before we had quite a crowd vying for a perch!

And within a couple of days, they emptied that feeder too.

And that left the (mostly melted) suet.

Let me just say here that a suet feeder might be a bit outside of the “comfort zone” of house sparrows. They are pretty much used to gathering their meals off the ground, or from friendly neighborhood bird feeders. But they were determined to say the least!

“What do you think is the best way to approach this? This side seems a little tough.”

“I think it’s worth the effort. There’s some pretty good stuff in here!”

“Yo! I didn’t know my tail bent this way!”

And once they got the hang of it (get it, “hang of it” :)) the show just never stopped!

Even today, with winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour, they are still giving it their best shot!

Wheeeeeeee…..
They might not be the brightest colored birds around, but they certainly are a feisty crew – and they’ve been really fun to watch!
You'd think it was the last bit of food in the neighborhood. (of course they had already cleaned out the other two feeders!)
I think we better get those other feeders filled before we have a real battle!

Global Big Day

Did you know that today (May 5) was (along with Cinco de Mayo and the running of the Kentucky Derby) Global Big Day? Me neither!

In the birding world, a “Big Day” is an attempt to see or hear as many bird species as possible in 24 hours. So a Global Big Day is when “Dedicated bird watchers worldwide …do their part … in parks, forests, backyards, desert scrub, and every habitat imaginable Continue reading Global Big Day

The neighborhood is changing…..

Life here at the campground is pretty quiet.

(Those two older trailers are unoccupied right now.)
But we have been enjoying some seasonal visitors.
First came the Northern Flickers.

Don’t they have the most amazing coloring? They arrived just on the heels of the Robins (not that robins have heels, mind you), and sometimes there would be several of them searching for ants in the grass.
But soon Gary got the bird feeder up

and the neighborhood really began to get interesting!
Of course, our friend the Chipping Sparrow was the first to find the goodies –

but before too long the Dark-Eyed Junco arrived.

The nuthatch arrived

and soon after the chickadee made an appearance.

Of course, even though these aren’t the largest bird feeders going, those ol’ blue jays don’t seem to have any trouble at all getting their share of the birdseed (and some of the smaller birds’ share too, I’m sure!)
BlueJays
A pair of cardinals stops by almost every day – always a delight!

(even if I can’t seem to get very good pictures of them!)

But what I was really looking forward to was the return of the goldfinches!

First the girls came and hung around for a bit. And then the male – a brilliant flash of yellow! Man, I love these little birds!

Together at last! I really enjoy watching these beauties!
We had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak stop by – but sadly I wasn’t fast enough with the camera to get a good picture.

REALLY hope he/she comes back again for a longer visit.
And the little tufted titmouse darts in and out – talk about hard to get a good shot!

But finally he landed long enough for nice profile shot –

We have the bird feeders set up right in front of the RV so we’ve had a good time getting to know our feathered neighbors. But tonight we looked over to the left and thought we saw a woodpecker. He was already moving away from the rig, but I grabbed the camera and shot in the general direction, hoping to get a picture of him.

Can you find him? Here he is, all cropped down (and pretty darn fuzzy) –

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, I think!
So that’s the neighborhood, so far. If I’ve misidentified any birds, feel free to leave a comment with the correction. We’re still waiting for the hummingbirds to find our hummingbird feeder, but we’re hopeful!
Who know who else might show up for a meal!? We’ll keep you posted!

After Gary wraps up some work in the morning, we’re headed to the Cabin for a nice long weekend. Little Happy Dance happening here! Just thought I’d warn you that it will either be pretty quiet here for the rest of the week, or really chatty and full of cabin pictures. You just never know how these weekend go! 🙂

Maybe we’ll catch the pear trees in blossom again!
