December – Part II

Back in 2024, I flew to Pennsylvania in mid-December to surprise my sister for her 75th birthday. It was great fun, working with her kids in the area to facilitate the surprise, and even more fun spending those days with Joie! I decided then that an annual trip (but without the surprise element) was something I needed to work into my December schedule. And so was born the Second Annual Birthday Trip.

We did all the things we love to do together –
Puzzles

and games

(Super fun afternoon joining friends for a Rummicub marathon.)
and thrifting, of course!

(Yes, I brought home (much) more than I took!)
We enjoyed lunch out with Joie’s lovely SIL

(Yes, we are wearing matching scarves. Sorry, not sorry!)
and even got to take in a delightful Christmas concert at their local Christian School.

(Oh, the memories of the many Christmas concerts we attended over the years!)
Since Joie has several of her kids living within a reasonable driving distance, we also got to spend some lovely time with those folks, too! No picture of the nine who came for brunch one day,

but we did get to spend some quality time (and did a bit more thrifting, tis true!) with these folks!

(This dear family also lives close to the airport and were instrumental in the entire ‘getting me there’ project!)

Quiet mornings, coffee with cream, homemade everything, and time to share our hearts. How precious those days were. Days that reminded us of how much we miss our sister, Elna (who is waiting for us in heaven), but also how blessed we are to have each other!
And how important it is to get the Third Annual Birthday Trip on the calendar!

But wait – there’s more!! The December fun continues…
Next time!

T’was the weekend before…

…the weekend before Christmas when I boarded an airplane pointing north to surprise my sister for her birthday. The plan was hatched back in September when I realized (with alarm!) I wasn’t going to see her again until May. Too long, my friends. Too long. So I started checking flights and conspired with my niece to facilitate actually getting me to Joie’s house. Tickets were bought, pick-ups and deliveries were confirmed, and the plan set! Now I just needed to not spill the beans for the next three months! There were a couple of close calls during those months and we didn’t quite pull off the “jump out of the cake” type of surprise, but my precious sister was still delightfully surprised when I showed up at her birthday brunch!

And what a fun Sister Weekend we had!
Joie & Fitz recently moved from their 4 bedroom turn-of-the-century farmhouse into a lovely 2 bedroom home – all on one level! So we’ve both been going through some housing changes – major downsizing for her, and a bit of upsizing for me! It was great to see their lovely new home and marvel at how they managed to make it feel just perfect for them! (Now I need to get her here to Texas!)
But we didn’t just sit around marveling at the cute new place!
We helped out with the Christmas concert at their local Christian school,
Untitled
mostly helping with the reception following the concert, but thoroughly enjoyed the young students as they gave their best for the Lord!

Yes, there were ukuleles. So fun!
Along with doing some of our favorite things – like puzzles
Untitled
and watching the birds at her feeders while sitting comfortably inside,
Untitled
we (Joie) also made a giant batch of caramel corn to feed to the Senior High Youth Group who were meeting at their place Sunday evening!
Untitled
(I watched carefully and brought home the recipe, so you never know…)
Sunday brought a little dusting of snow – just enough to remind me how very pretty it is, but also how much I don’t need to ever drive in it again!

It was a perfectly delightful weekend, that filled my heart with sister love! We drank coffee and ate chocolate and shared our hearts. And missed Elna, of course!

We ended our time together with a meet-up with her daughter Abby (my ride to the airport) and her crew at a giant 40 ft. wooden slide-The Big Slide Mount Tabor Park At Rocky Ridge! What a fun way to end the weekend!

I convinced Joie that we really did need to give it a try and with a lot of encouragement from her grandchildren, we did just that!

Not too bad for a couple of old ladies!

If you’ve been stopping by this little corner of the internet for any time at all, you know how close we sisters are. Now that Elna is waiting for us in Heaven, Joie and I are working out this ‘new normal’ for us. We are so blessed to have each other – and this very special weekend was just a precious reminder of that very fact!
Amen.

In a real time note – it IS Christmas Eve! Pretty quiet here at our little place, but we’ll be heading to Waco in the morning to spend Christmas day with those Conrad Cowboys (and their folks!). This is the first time in 20 years we’ll be going to bed in our HOUSE on Christmas eve.  So many firsts – so many blessings!

Have a great Christmas, dear friends! May the gifts and glitter of these days never outshine the beauty that is the birth of Jesus!

Girls Week (end)

We tried.
We tried really hard.
But between travel and health and grands and just plain life, Joie and I just could not figure out how to squeeze in a “Girls’ Week” at the Cabin this year. So when I realized I had a clear weekend that coincided with a clear weekend on her end, coupled with the fact that Montrose was as close as I was going to be to her place this summer, we just had to make it happen. Gary gave up his truck for the weekend (and if you’re a one-car family you can appreciate that), and off I went.

(Side note – coming through the mountains the Mountain Laurel was fabulous! I finally understood why it’s the state flower!)
It was only a Thursday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, but we treasured each and every moment.
Untitled
We visited with sweet friends over in Carlisle, checked out the end-of-the-season sale at their favorite greenhouse
Untitled
and joined in an (almost) all-family Zoom call to go over some Cabin business.

We also squeezed in breakfast at a local “farm to table” restaurant and some yard sales. (I mean, really. What’s a summer weekend without a yard sale?)
The rest of our time was spent catching up, playing games, or maybe just sitting quietly enjoying each other’s company. And missing Elna. How blessed we are to have each other, and to have had so many wonderful “Girls Weeks” in the past. Treasured moments all.
Maybe next time we’ll have to plan an All Girls’ Week – and make sure some of the next generation gets in on the beauty of these special times. Oh, it will be different, I know. But I truly think it will be a good different.  What do you think – Sharon, Bethany, Heather, Hannah, Christiana, Robyn, Emily, Abby, Lara, Tammy, Abigail, and Sydney? Shall we give it a go?  Let me know if I should start planning now!
